SIFIR’S TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
Periodically throughout the year, we offer training opportunities unique to our field and incorporate the input of the members and attendees when creating upcoming training sessions
As investigators of Use of Force incidents ourselves, we know that finding training that helps us with the issues we face is difficult. Most of us have been to the same training conferences and seminars, which give us valuable information (biomechanics, legal updates), but talking to experts about the hard questions and nuts and bolts of running a case is a much rarer find. With suggestions from our membership, such as specific trainers or simply topics we need, SIFIR uses our collective voice and ability to obtain speakers and presentations we need to do our jobs.
SIFIR is committed to at least one annual conference by our bylaws and hope to grow to three conferences per year spread geographically, to increase access across the country.
WHY IS SIFIR’S TRAINING EFFECTIVE
NON-PROFIT FOR A REASON:
- Our by-laws prohibit personal profit for serving board members to maintain integrity
- Our goal is to provide training that we have difficulty finding ourselves
- Our non-profit status assists with lowering the cost of training
NETWORK WITHIN OUR FIELD
By meeting with people that have a narrow interest in Use of Force investigations, we create a fraternal atmosphere of cooperation and mutual benefit. Many of our members met prior to the creation of SIFIR while seeking out training to improve our Use of Force investigations. We’ve found that, meeting face to face, someone we’ve met has already faced each unique scenario and has advice to offer. We try to build in extended breaks to digest and discuss the information presented and how it applies to your specific field of expertise and local policies as well as to promote networking. Why reinvent a wheel that may have already been built?
WHY IS SIFIR’S TRAINING IMPORTANT?
Turn on the news or land on any news website and there is almost always a Use of Force incident in the headlines. What we do is important, so getting it right is critical. You are serving the public, your administration, and the officers at your agency. In founding SIFIR, we thought it was critically important to have a source of information that was free from the influence of outside forces and would stand for integrity in the field.
Many training and consulting careers have been built in Use of Force liability training. This field has earned some experts enormous salaries while establishing potential attacks of bias and professional advocacy for one side or another. As a non-profit with a no-profit rule for individual board members, we strive to maintain the integrity of being an impartial information source with no profit motivation or purchasable allegiance to any party in any litigation. Maintaining a distributed board of directors helps us to stay true to a best practices goal. Rather than having best defenses to liability, we strive for best practices pursuant to seeking the truth and improving the integrity of the profession.
